You are sure to find it is one of the country's most interesting places, but if you book a Tuscany villa and visit the city this summer, siena may not be one of Italy's holiday hotspots.

Art and stunning architecture at almost every turn - not to mention a selection of fine restaurants, siena has history, like all the best Italian cities.

You are sure to find plenty to do and see in the city, whether you are staying in Siena itself or are looking at holiday rentals in rural Tuscany.

Which still dominates the streets and squares in the city centre, it is perhaps best known for its medieval history and architecture.

Visit Siena's bustling main square and you will come face-to-face with the Palazzo Pubblico - the 14th century town hall.

Which contains arguably the finest non-religious frescos in the world in the form of Ambrogio Lorenzetti's allegories of good and bad government, its imposing facade is matched by its ornate interior.

A 14th century bell tower which has been copied in cities across the world, next to the Palazzo Pubblico is the Torre del Mangia.

Although nothing can quite match the magnificence of the Duomo di Siena, the streets of the city centre have a host of beautifully-designed houses and churches to see.

While the interior contains so many beautiful artefacts that it could easily be mistaken for an art gallery, work on the cathedral began in the 13th century and its exterior is one of the finest examples of the Tuscan Gothic style.

Donatello and Bernini, pulpit and altar are works by the likes of Michelangelo, in among the ornate mosaic floor.

Have been moved to the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo - one of a number of galleries and museums in the city, including works by Cimabue and Duccio, several pieces which once resided in the Duomo.

Beccafumi and Sassetta on display, pietro Lorenzetti, which has pieces by Duccio, perhaps the finest collection of art in Siena can be found in La Pinacoteca Nazionale.

Hare and truffle, beef, with most of the dishes made from local produce such as pork, the city has restaurants to suit all budgets. After a day exploring Siena's history and culture you'll be ready to taste its cuisine.

You'll probably also want to sample Tuscany's other famous produce by washing your meal down with a glass or two of Chianti.
